Neutropenia

The mission of the Registry is to establish a Greek database of treatment and disease-related outcomes for persons diagnosed with SCN. Collection of this information will lead to improved medical care and become a focus for future research.

Severe chronic neutropenia (SCN) is the name given to a group of conditions in which neutropenia is the primary problem. The severity and symptoms of the neutropenia differ widely among the various sub-types of neutropenia and even from patient to patient within each disease type.

The term neutropenia describes the situation where the number of neutrophils in the blood is too low. Neutrophils are very important in defending the body against bacterial infections and therefore, a patient with too few neutrophils is more susceptible to bacterial infections. Neutropenia can occur for different reasons.

About

Neutropenia is a reduction in the absolute number of circulating neutrophils below the lower limit of the normal distribution for a given ethnic population.Absolute neutrophil counts (ANCs) vary according to age and ethnicity. It is lower in children than in adults. Normal values for the total WBC and absolute neutrophil count (ANC).

Signs and Symptoms

Neutropenia can go undetected, but is generally discovered when a patient has developed severe infections or sepsis. Although recurrent infections are a significant consequence of neutropenia, the classical signs of infection may be less apparent in neutropenic patients. The most frequent sites of infection

Diagnosis

Neutropenia is a fairly frequent finding, usually well tolerated which normalizes quite rapidly. Normally, the neutrophil count fluctuates physiologically in a nonrandom manner.  Therefore, the recurrent nature of neutropenia should be established on at least 3 samples over several weeks (for 8 to 12 weeks)

Therapy

The clinical management of neutropenia depends upon the cause and degree, as well as the presence of associated disease states.

The registry

The application is addressed to physicians related to the subject and consists of a large number of projections and prints, which emerged from the analysis in collaboration with doctors of the Hematology Clinic of the University Hospital of Heraklion.

The registry follows the patient's course throughout the course of the diagnosis and during the follow-up, allowing the initial data to be entered and updated regularly. At the same time, a record is available for patients who underwent splenectomy in cases where they were performed.
